First Sunday of Lent
"Be with me Lord when I am in trouble."
Psalm 91
Meditation
Jesus, was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.
The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God
command this stone to become a loaf of bread."
Jesus replied, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'"
Then the devil showed him all the kingdoms of the world.
And he said to him, "I will give you all this power and glory,
Worship me, then, it shall all be yours."
But Jesus said to him, "Scripture says, You must worship
the Lord your God, and serve him alone."
Then the devil took him to Jerusalem and placed him
on the pinnacle on the Temple saying.., "If you are the Son of God,
throw yourself down from here, for it is written,
'He will command his angels
to protect you.
They will hold you up, in case you hurt your foot against a stone.'
Jesus answered him, "It is said: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
Reflection
During this Lenten season can I learn to resist my self-serving pride, always having things my way, and learn to place my total trust in Jesus as my companion, my guide?
Prayer
Fill me, O God, with the courage and strength of your Son to resist the forces that seduce me into thinking 'I can do it all myself', 'I can possess the glory that belongs to you', and 'I can take your love for granted'.
Amen.
